Growth Scan in Pregnancy: Importance, Timing & Results

Best IUI and IVF Fertility Treatment Clinic in Hyderabad

Your doctor has asked you to come in for a growth scan. And now you may be wondering: what exactly will they check? What do the numbers mean? Should you be worried? A growth scan in pregnancy is a routine ultrasound done in the later months to check how your baby is growing.

At Kamineni Fertility, our team supports women through every stage of pregnancy. Whether you are attending routine antenatal care or need closer monitoring, a growth scan can give your doctor a clear picture of how things are going.

What Is a Growth Scan in Pregnancy?

A growth scan is an ultrasound that checks your baby's growth and wellbeing. The sonographer uses sound waves to look at your baby on a screen and takes measurements of your baby's head, tummy and thigh bone. These measurements help your doctor understand whether your baby is growing as expected.

It is safe, painless and not simply about looking at your baby. It helps track growth, fluid levels, baby's position and other signs that guide pregnancy care.

How Is It Different From a Doppler Scan?

A growth scan and a Doppler scan are not the same thing, although they are often done together. The growth scan checks the baby's size and growth pattern. A Doppler scan checks whether blood is flowing well through the umbilical cord to your baby. Think of it this way: the growth scan checks the size, and the Doppler checks the supply line.

When Is a Growth Scan Done?

Most growth scans happen between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. This is the stage when babies grow quickly and any differences in growth become easier to spot.

Your doctor may suggest a growth scan around 28 to 32 weeks for an early growth check, around 34 to 36 weeks for a final growth and position check, or later if there are concerns about movements, fluid, placenta or baby's estimated weight.

Does Everyone Need a Growth Scan?

Not everyone needs one as a routine check. Your doctor may recommend a growth scan if you are expecting twins, have gestational diabetes, have high blood pressure, had a previous small or large baby, have a high-risk pregnancy, or if the belly measurement is smaller or larger than expected.

What Does the Scan Measure?

Your growth scan report usually includes four main measurements:

  • BPD: The width of your baby's head from one side to the other.
  • HC: The measurement around your baby's head.
  • AC: The measurement around your baby's tummy, which reflects how well your baby is being nourished through the placenta.
  • FL: The length of your baby's thigh bone.

These numbers are used together to calculate the estimated weight of your baby. One number alone does not give the full picture; your doctor looks at the overall growth trend.

What Are Growth Percentiles?

Percentile is the part that confuses many parents. If your baby is on the 30th percentile, it means 30 babies out of 100 of the same gestational age are smaller and 70 are bigger. It does not automatically mean something is wrong. It simply shows where your baby sits in the expected growth range.

What Else Will the Report Show?

Your growth scan report may also mention fluid around the baby, placenta position, baby's position, baby's movements and whether a Doppler check was done. Too little or too much fluid may need further review, and baby's position helps with delivery planning.

What Does a Normal Result Look Like?

A normal growth scan usually shows that all four growth measurements are within the expected range, amniotic fluid looks normal, the placenta looks good, blood flow is reassuring if Doppler was checked, and the baby is moving during the scan.

What If the Baby Is Measuring Small?

A baby below the 10th percentile is called small for gestational age. This does not always mean the baby is unwell. Your doctor may check blood flow, repeat the scan after some time, or monitor you more closely. A steady growth trend at a lower percentile can still be completely fine.

What If the Baby Is Measuring Large?

A baby above the 90th percentile is called large for gestational age. Your doctor may advise a glucose test to check for gestational diabetes and will discuss how the result may affect delivery planning. Again, one number is not a crisis; the full picture matters.

When Should You Talk to a Doctor?

Speak to a doctor if you have reduced baby movements, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, a previous growth concern, or if you have been told that your baby is measuring small or large. Do not wait with questions. A growth scan is most useful when the results are interpreted along with your history and earlier scan reports.
