Preimplantation Genetic Screening & Diagnosis

Kamineni Fertility Centre facilitates both Preimplantation Genetic Screening and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis.

In Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS), also known as aneuploidy screening, chromosomes of embryos conceived by In-vitro fertilization (IVF) is checked for common abnormalities. This avoids transferring abnormal embryos to the womb during IVF/ICSI, with the aim of increasing IVF pregnancy & delivery rates.

In Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), the genes of embryos created through In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Intra-cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is checked for specific genetic abnormalities that run in the family so that parents can prevent passing these genetic abnormalities to their children. This helps to ensure that only unaffected embryos are selected before they are transferred to the womb.

Conventional pre-natal tests for genetic diseases cannot be carried out until the 12th week of pregnancy. In both PGS and PGD, testing embryos before they are implanted could help avoid having to make the difficult decision whether to have an abortion if either of the parent is the carrier of a genetic condition and the embryo is affected.

Process

The procedure for PGD is likely to be as follows:

  • Step 1
  • Step 2
  • Step 3
  • Step 4
  • Step 5
  • Step 6
  • Step 7

Couple undergoes normal In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment to collect and fertilize your eggs.

The embryo is grown in the embroyology lab incubator for two - three days until the cells have divided and the embryo consists of around eight cells.

A trained embryologist removes one or two of the cells (blastomeres) from the embryo.

The cells are tested to see if the embryo from which they were removed contains the gene that causes the genetic condition in the family.

Embryos unaffected by the condition are transferred to the womb to allow them to develop.

Any suitable remaining unaffected embryos can be frozen for later use. Those embryos that are affected by the condition are allowed to perish.

About two weeks after the embryo transfer, the woman is given a pregnancy blood test.
